Hotcity is an initiative of the City of Luxembourg to build a municipal wireless Internet infrastructure. Until the end of 2009 a seamless mesh network of 400 access points will be deployed to allow access anywhere in the boundary of the VdL. Hotcity is part of the e-City vision, whose aim is to create a virtual city allowing the citizens to access or benefit from a wealth of public and private services via fixed or mobile infrastructure. Hotcity is an open project inviting public services, businesses, retailers, application editors and independent stakeholders to join in with applications offering added value services to all types of users.
Hotcity… The new features
At the beginning of summer, the City of Luxembourg will enter phase III of its wireless internet project "Hotcity" by offering wider coverage of the City with new partners. Since the month of July 2007, the City of Luxembourg has been offering people on the move, with a laptop, a mobile phone or a PDA, internet access in the Upper City. As of today, this offer is extended to people in the Station district and also includes the new Luxembourg airport terminal. Technical coverage should reach 45% of the city by the end of 2008 and will be gradually extended thanks to the technical expertise in general, and particularly the expertise in the domain of WiFi (wireless communication) of Entreprise des Postes et Télécommunications (P&T).

In the past years, the City of Luxemburg has been developing a variety of technical projects and infrastructures in order to improve the quality of life and to intensify communication between the municipality and the citizens. The recent integration of P&T Luxembourg in the project will contribute to a better development of the network and to the success of the project.

The City of Luxembourg aquired a solid expertise by implementing it’s Hotcity municipal wifi network, ranging from technological to operational and commercial aspects. We therefore offer our expertise to other cities around the world in their municipal wifi projects.
